INITIAL RESPONSE

When an audible alarm or flashing strobe light is present, leave the building:

  • Remain calm
  • Alert others in the area of need to relocate or evacuate
  • Listen for instructions from overhead announcement
  • Move out of the immediate area
  • Exit the building through the closest stairwell
  • Do not use the elevator
  • Once outside the building move to your assigned meeting place
  • If you exit out of the WEST stairwell meet on the NORTH side of Superior Street along the Neiman Marcus Building
  • If you exit out of the SOUTH stairwell then meet on the EAST side of St. Clair Street (along the Northwestern Memorial Hospital Parking Lot)
  • Account for all visitors and staff
  • Report any missing person to security or Chicago Fire Department

 

SECONDARY RESPONSE

& FOLLOW UP

  • If you are located in the SE corner AND if you are in immediate danger, use the fire escape. Otherwise use the closest exit
  • Move those persons unable to walk down the stairs, to the WEST stairwell which is a safe area of refuge
  • Notify Chicago Fire Department of the location of any persons unable to walk down the stairs and waiting in a stairwell
  • Wait for instructions from the Chicago Fire Department and/or Hospital Designee before re-entry
  • Exercise caution at all times when crossing the street. Watch out for fire trucks, fire hoses and falling debris
